Mary Eliza Lively, a dusky hued dam sel whojhj a habitue of Paddy's Hollow besides being a frequent attendant at the Mayor's levees and upon the Criminal Court, was arraigned this morning upon the charge of being drunk and disorderly and resisting the police. From the testi mony of officers Grant and Moore the de fendant was drunk and very disorderly on last Thursday night, about 11 o'clock, and when spoken to by the policeman on that boat replied by cursing and abusing tha whole police force and defying them to arrest her, and when -she was arrested fought and bit the officer resisting the arrest so strenuously Ihat he felt com I - ' ! I pel ed to I use his club, and struck her a blow which inflcted a wound on the head from which theblood flowed quite prefusely. The defendant then raised a small sized-pandemonium all the way to the Guard House, while the air was filled with the' most, horrfd imprecations and oaths ever uttered, the noise being dis tinctly heard for squares around. 1 After hearing the evidence His Honor remarked that he would make it pretty lively for the defendant for the next'Sixty days and see if he couldn't cure her. Upon the charge ef being drunk and disorderly a sentence of thirty days, imprisonment Wis passed, and for resisting the police aiother thirty days was givenmaking in all sixty days, or the balance ef the sum mer, which Mary Eliza Lively will spend in the Ci P. ' . While the above case was being tried a telephone came that that there was ad is turbanc? on the corner of Mulberry and Sixth streets. Two policemen were dis patched thither, and the Court adjourned. Shortly after the adjournment, however, Sergeant Davis brought in a colored wo man by the name of Lucy Fisher, charged with disorderly conduct. His Honor took hi3 seat again and proceeded to try the case,. The testimony of ofiicar Davis was that the woman was in the street acting in a very disorderly way and talking in a. very loud and boisterous manner, causing undue excitement in the neighborhood. A gentleman living in the neighborhood testi fied that tho defendant had on severa1 occasions oerore qisturDea ana aiarmeu the neighborhood in this same way, and that on this occasion she was using very vita language and rendering herself a nuisance' to e v ery one around. A large number of the good Demon cratic citizens of Columbus county met at Whiteville Depot on the evening of the 1st instant, whers they formed a torch light procession, and marched to White ville, one mile distant. Arriving at the Court House they were entertained with patriotic speeches by Capts. jj W. Ellis, V, V. Richardson and others. A Han cock and Jarvis Club was then formed with. Mr. D. P. High as President, S. E. Memory and J. B. Schulkjen, Secretaries, and J. S. Powell, Treasurer At a re- uest from the President the people came forward and signed the roll of the club, and in a very short time it numbered 100 names. The best of feeling and the great est enthusiasm prevailed, and when the meeting adjourned it was with three rousing cheers for the Na ional, State and , Congressional nominees.
